People working in the contract catering sector are the group most likely to eat lunch at their staff canteen, according to a new study.
Insurance provider PruHealth polled people about their workplace eating habits and found that more than half of all workers in the UK choose to buy their midday meal at work instead of bringing a packed lunch.
The survey also found that caterers are the most likely to get lunch from their own canteen, with 37 per cent saying that they dine where they work.
Katie Roswell, PruHealth's marketing director, underlined the importance of good workplace nutrition, explaining: "Encouraging staff to take a balanced approach to healthy eating can have a positive impact on employees' stress levels as well as their overall wellbeing."
Last month, some of the UK's leading contract catering firms - Aramark, BaxterStorey, Compass Group, Elior and Sodexho- agreed to improve access to healthy food in the workplace after consultations with the Food Standards Agency.
They have made commitments on a range of issues, including providing nutritional information in canteens and menu choices.
