Minimum wage hike to benefit caterers

The increase of the national minimum wage (NMW) for people aged over 22-years-old is due to benefit those in catering and hotel jobs among others, it has been reported.

Research from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) claims up to one million workers will receive added support from the new hourly rate of £5.73, up from £5.52.

According to the study, two-thirds of those to which the increase will be an advantage will be women.

TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber highlighted the issue of employers who fail to pay the NMW and how they will be dealt with.

"Honest employers do suffer … when dodgy ones fail to pay the minimum wage. Tougher enforcement penalties and greater funding for HM Revenue and Customs are the best ways to crackdown on these minimum wage cheats," Mr Barber said.

In other news, figures from the Office of National Statistics revealed nearly half of women's jobs in 2008 were part-time, with dependent children having a big impact on hours worked.
