Contract catering firm Almond Catering has won a £1.26 million deal to feed staff and students at the University of Cumbria.

The four-year contract will see the business supply some 156,000 meals annually and provide 15 hospitality jobs.

It is the first major contract the Scottish firm has won in northern England and will see the firm working at the university's Brampton Road and Caldewgate campuses.

Alan Aitken, managing director of Almond Catering, said: "This is an important and prominent contract win for us.

"We have already established a track record and excellent reputation in Scotland and are delighted to bring our unrivalled service to establishments in the north of England."

Among the services provided will be an outlet of Costa Coffee.

Established in 2004, other clients of the firm include Knight Frank and the Registers of Scotland.

According to Almond Catering, it is Scotland's largest independent company in the contract catering sector and serves a client base of 50-plus, feeding over five million people a year.
