Almost a fifth of businesses plan to take on seasonal staff as Christmas approaches, according to new research.
The study, conducted by CareerBuilder, has revealed that 18 per cent of firms plan to utilise temporary workers to help them cope with the traditionally busy period, up from 17 per cent last year.
Furthermore, a third (31 per cent) of businesses stated that they were "likely" to hire a seasonal worker for a full-time position, meaning that the number of vacancies could be higher than the headline figure suggests.
Hospitality jobs are among the most likely positions to be available to seasonal staff.
According to the firm, recruiters will have their pick of a wide pool of talent.
"Competition for seasonal positions will be intense as the job market is flooded with qualified candidates," a spokesperson said.
Recently, the 19th edition of Harden's London Restaurants revealed that the sector has held up well despite the recession.
It revealed that closure rates in the capital were at their lowest level since 2000, something that could offer a boost to the hospitality jobs market in the run-up to Christmas.
