The current traffic light system which is used to indicate the content of food products needs to be retained, according to one expert, whose views could affect people looking for catering jobs in the north-east.
Paul Lincoln, chief executive of the National Heart Forum, said that the current traffic light concept needs to be kept because it is simple for people to understand.
"The traffic light system with high, medium, low and guideline daily amounts was the one that worked best in the independent research that was undertaken and also worked best for people of all social and ethnic groups," he said.
Mr Lincoln added that a single scheme which is universally recognised in the industry is important and will help people from all backgrounds to understand what is in the food they eat.
The Food Standards Agency recently stated that front-of-label packaging should contain percentages and a traffic light system to indicate its content.
