People interested in working in hotels should brace themselves for the strange items that forgetful guests leave behind when they check out, a new survey has revealed.

While mobile phones and clothes are the belongings most often left behind at Travelodge properties across the UK, some guests manage to overlook their more unusual possessions when packing.

According to the chain, 2007 saw hotel staff discover a Lord Mayor's chain, a blue glass eye and a remote control helicopter measuring six foot by six foot in guest rooms.

Guy Parsons, Travelodge chief operating officer, commented that the company's "lost and found departments provide plenty of revelations", adding: "The property left behind can tell a million tales."

According to a poll released by the chain last year, around 6,500 books are left behind by guests annually.

The tome most often abandoned in hotels in 2007 was Alastair Campbell's memoirs, The Blair Years, while books by former tabloid editor Piers Morgan and glamour model Katie Price were also discarded by guests.
