Pub chain 'well-positioned' to meet 2008 challenges

Pub chain Marston's has said it is in a good position to weather any economic uncertainty over the next few months.

The firm revealed that although the introduction of the smoking ban and changing customer demands have had an affect on its business, it feels it is ready to meet any challenges 2008 might bring.

In a statement, it said: "Our high quality pub estate is well positioned to exploit favourable market trends including the growth in casual dining.

"Our value- for-money offers and mid-market position are appropriate for the current economic climate."

Under its Marston's Inns and Taverns brand, the firm operates more than 500 pubs and bars across the UK. including the popular Pitcher and Piano chain and its specialist 'Two for One' pubs, which offer meal deals.

Earlier this month, the company revealed that one of its properties, the The Anchor at Wadesmill, had created 15 new local jobs for people in Hertfordshire after a massive refurbishment programme was launched to turn it into a family-friendly venue.
