People applying for hotel manager jobs at budget hotel chain Travelodge are to take part in a new type of interview process, it has been revealed.

The firm is currently looking to recruit 30 people for senior hotel jobs at its properties in London but has decided to abandon the lengthy format of a traditional interview and instead spend three minutes talking with each candidate before moving on to the next interview.

Ruth Saunders, the firm's resourcing manager, said: "We all know that first impressions count. Statistics differ but most experts agree that we all decide whether we do or don't like someone within the first minute and a half of meeting them."

"We will recruit more than 1,000 managers by 2020 and it is imperative that we continue to find new and innovative ways to recruit in order to find the right people."

Candidates who impress recruiters with the communication skills and sense of humour during their allotted three minutes will be invited back for a second interview.

Travelodge has said it is aiming to open one new hotel every eight working days in 2008 and has previously announced plans to expand its presence in the Spanish hotel market.
