A US businessman is set to turn a well-known office building in the City into a luxury hotel, creating hospitality jobs in the capital.

Stan Thomas plans to spend £150 million converting the grade II-listed 10 Trinity Square into a 131-bedroom hotel and spa, reports the Evening Standard.

Thomas Enterprises purchased the site in 2006 and has applied for planning permission from the City Corporation to turn it into a hotel.

"Our vision for 10 Trinity is to create the finest hotel in London and restore one of its most important Grade II-listed buildings. There is no other site like this in the capital," Rob Steul of architects Woods Bagot, designer of the proposed scheme, tells the publication.

The proposals would see a glass dome extension added to the courtyard of the building, which would act as the heart of the development.

Number 10 Trinity Square was originally opened in 1922 by prime minister David Lloyd George and has hosted some significant events such as the inaugural meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1946.

It overlooks the Tower of London and the River Thames.
