Leisure firm Whitbread is to build a brand new budget hotel in the west Midlands, it has been confirmed.

The group is expected to begin work on the seven-storey Premier Inn at Walsall's Waterfront later this year, reports the expressandstar.com.

Furthermore, the new 120–bed establishment is set to create around 60 hospitality jobs for the region.

Town chiefs expressed relief at the decision, as there had been concerns that the economic downturn may have put paid to a planned makeover of the Waterfront.

Dr Peter Cromar, chief executive of Walsall Regeneration Company, said: "This is great news and shows we are committed to redesigning the Waterfront despite the hard economic times."

The new hotel will be situated between Wolverhampton Street and the town arm of the Walsall Canal, in close proximity to the town centre.

It was recently reported that Welford Road stadium, home of the Leicester Tigers, could be get a brand new hotel as part of a £100 million development.
