A £120 million investment in the Royal Bath and West Showground to run over a decade is being planned.

If given the go-ahead, bosses claim the project at Shepton Mallet will create around 1,500 local jobs.

Furthermore, the development would incorporate multiple hotels, potentially creating a wealth of hospitality jobs for the area.

A spokesman said the scheme would provide a substantial boost to the local and regional economy.

Dr Jane Guise, chief executive of the Royal Bath & West of England Society, said her organisation wants to create a "vibrant high-quality" events venue.

"We hope to make significant progress with the major tourist and business elements before the end of 2012," she said.

Elsewhere, it was recently reported that leisure firm Whitbread is to build a brand new Premier Inn at Walsall's Waterfront later this year.

The new 120–bed establishment is set to create around 60 hospitality jobs for the region.
