A Bristol pub is being demolished to make way for a new hotel.

The Bristol Evening Post reports that the Artichoke in Lewins Mead will be replaced by a 175-bedroom Premier Inn, after closing its doors last year.

Some 60 hotel jobs are expected to be created by the £8 million development.

The site will also feature a new restaurant.

Work on Premier Inn's latest Bristol development is expected to begin later this year and will be the chain's 11th site in the region.

Premier Inn was recently presented with the the Leisure and Tourism award at the inaugural Customer Satisfaction Awards, beating competition from other chains such as Marriott and Holiday Inn.

Andrew Gammage, head of quality and guest insight, commented: "Premier Inn is currently achieving the highest Guest Recommend scores ever. What this award does is reinforce what guests think compared to competitors."

The winner of the award was determined from the feedback of more than 24,000 consumers.
