The tourism industry can help pull the UK out of the recession, it has been claimed.

According to UKinbound, the size and importance of the sector can help by providing hospitality jobs both in urban and rural areas.

Mary Rance, the chief executive of UKinbound, stated that the industry has survived many crises in recent years, including 9/11 and Foot and Mouth and is well-placed to cope with the current downturn.

"As yet it is riding this period perhaps better than some other industries and it has huge potential to continue to offer employment at this very difficult time," she said.

Ms Rance added that the current economic climate provides an opportunity for people within the industry, including those with hotel jobs, to be creative and make people aware of what a great destination the UK is.

The Office for National Statistics Travel Trends 2007 report, published in January 2009, showed that overseas residents made 32.8 million visits to the UK in 2007, an all-time record.
