A leading hotel and restaurant group has announced new training and employment plans.

Whitbread, which owns the Premier Inn chain, has launched a new apprenticeship programme and intends to create 1,000 hospitality jobs and catering recruitment opportunities.

Over the course of 2009, the group will open 12 new hotels, four restaurants and more than 100 Costa Coffee outlets.

Furthermore, it expects 3,000 employees to gain NVQs and certificates by the end of the year.

Alan Parker, Whitbread chief executive, said: "We need to keep demonstrating that working in the hospitality industry is a great career move, not just a job.

"We anticipate that 20 per cent of our workforce will have a nationally recognised qualification by 2010."

Currently, Whitbread employs around 33,000 people in the UK.

It was recently reported that budget hotel chain Premier Inn is in discussions with Northern Irish developer Deramore to open up a new establishment in Edinburgh.
