Green-conscious hospitality workers may be inclined to seek hotel jobs within the Marriott chain, after the international group was named the most environmentally-friendly hotelier in the UK.

Marriott Hotels International has been ranked in 17th place in the 60 Best Green Companies in Britain listing published in the Sunday Times – the highest placing of any firm in the hospitality sector.

The firm also won first prize in the category for large companies with a medium environmental impact.

Govert Deketh, environment chairman of the London Marriott Business Council, described the ranking and Sunday Times award as "great news".

He added: "We have been working very hard to reduce the impact that we have on the environment. Environmental awareness is at the core of how we do business every day."

Richard Caseby, managing editor of the Sunday Times, added:"The 60 companies in this survey are all pioneers – enterprising, enlightened and fizzing with new ideas."

Earlier this week, Marriott announced that free rooms are to be given away at its London hotel when guests book a minimum of three mid-week nights.
