Employees working in hospitality jobs at Belfast's Merchant Hotel have been given a huge seal of approval as its bar has been named the best in the world in a new competition.

The Belfast Telegraph reports how the five-star hotel's bar was given the accolade at the Spirit Awards, staged at New Orleans' Tales of the Cocktail Festival.

Judged by industry experts from around the globe, the awards recognise licensed establishments that excel in the presentation of cocktails and spirits.

Sean Muldoon, bar manager and mixologist at The Merchant Hotel, said he was "thrilled" that The Merchant had become a world beater and paid tribute to his bar staff.

He added: "This really puts Belfast and Northern Ireland on the world's hospitality map. To be the only hotel in Ireland, and indeed Europe, to achieve such acclaim is a credit to the talent that exists here, within the hospitality trade."

Earlier this month, the newspaper reported how the The Park Avenue Hotel, Belfast, which employs 100 professionals in hospitality jobs, gained an extra star following a £5 million refurbishment.
