Developer Peel Holdings has announced new proposals for a £70 million development in Nottingham city centre that could create 1,500 local jobs.

If approved, the scheme would see a hotel, shops and offices built on land next to Nottingham station, which is currently occupied by the Sovereign House office block and a car park, reports thisisnottingham.co.uk.

The plans have been met with a warm welcome from local councillors, who are conscious of the important location of the site as it is the first thing visitors to the city will see if they travel by train.

Councillor Rob Lee said: "It will be exciting in and around the station and it will become a vibrant area."

Peel Holdings came up with the new proposals after plans to build 259 flats on the land were abandoned due to the collapse in the housing market.

Plans to build a new £30 million 244-bed hotel in Leeds were recently given the go-ahead by the city's planners.
