Property developed Sun Explorer has lodged a planning application to build a new £50 million hotel in Belfast city centre, which could mean the prospect of hundreds of local jobs.

The firm claimed the 26-storey development, which would also contain 144 serviced apartments and leisure facilities, would inject new life into the Castle Street/King Street quarter of the city.

Entitled the Vetro building, the hotel would also boast a striking glass façade and could provide about 300 local jobs, it claimed.

The proposal has been welcomed by the city's MP Gerry Adams, who said: "The construction of a world class hotel at the junction of Castle Street and King Street has enormous positive implications for west Belfast."

Northern Ireland will also be seeing the development of the first hotel in Lisburn since it became a city.

The new Premier Inn, which has brought 50 hotel jobs to the region, opens today (September 24th).
