The latest figures from PKF Hotel Consultancy Services show that hotel managers in London had a successful festive period, but elsewhere in the nation the situation looked bleaker.
Year-on-year occupancy increased in London by 5.3 per cent to hit 76.7 per cent over the Christmas and New Year period in 2009.
Room rates rose by 1.9 per cent to reach £117.27 and room yield was up 7.3 per cent to £89.93.
Over the year as a whole, despite an increase in occupancy from 80.1 per cent in 2008 to 81.2 per cent in 2009, room yield fell by 4.3 per cent to £92.91.
In the regions, occupancy rose by 0.1 per cent to 59.1 per cent in December, but there were falls in both room rates and yields.
Over the course of 2009, regional hotel managers saw occupancy, room rates and yields all fall significantly.
PKF's Robert Barnard said: "The global and UK economies are not out of the woods yet, but over the course of 2010 I would hope to see trade pick up in response to a gradual recovery in global travel as the year develops."
Deloitte research recently found that revenue per available room in London increased in the final quarter of 2009 by 5.5 per cent to £110.
