VisitBritain has launched a new campaign aimed at encouraging more overseas visitors to holiday in the UK and providing a much-needed boost the hospitality industry.
The new campaign, which is supported by British Airways and easyJet, highlights the variety of cultures and attractions on offer in the UK, with the emphasis being placed on cities including Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle-Gateshead and Oxford.
Commenting on the initiative, Mary Rance, chief executive of UKinbound, said: "The inbound tourism industry makes a great contribution to the UK economy and UKinbound welcomes this initiative as a great opportunity to increase the awareness and the profile of the UK as value for money destination."
She added that the UK is currently a great value destination for European visitors due to the pound's weakness against the euro.
An influx of European tourists would be welcome news for people in hotel jobs. Recent data from PKF Hotel Consultancy Services showed that while London's hotels saw occupancy increase 5.3 per cent year-on-year in December 2009, occupancy rates for the rest of the nation fell 5.1 per cent.
