Newbury Racecourse has been given permission to go ahead with a new development which could create hotel jobs in Berkshire.

The development will include up to 1,500 homes, refurbished racecourse facilities and a 120-bedroom hotel.

Newbury Racecourse and its partner David Wilson Homes were given permission by the Western Area Planning Committee of West Berkshire Council.

The application will now be referred to the Government Office for the south-east and a final decision should be made in the next six weeks.

Sarah Hordern, managing director of property development and finance at Newbury Racecourse, said: "The regeneration of the site will also provide us with the opportunity to increase our contribution to the community and economy in the Newbury area and is expected to create around 300 jobs."

Elsewhere developers have announced plans to build a new six-storey, 120-bedroom hotel in York which will create 50 hotel jobs in North Yorkshire, according to the Press.
