A new development in Scarborough will bring the seaside resort its first purpose-built hotel in more than 80 years, according to one newspaper, which said that the establishment is expected to create around 50 hotel jobs.

The Scarborough Evening News reported that Premier Inn is behind the development, which will be a 74-bedroom hotel, feature a Brewers Fayre restaurant on the first floor and is expected to open in March 2011.

Kevin Murray, acquisition manager for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, which owns the budget chain, told the newspaper: "Premier Inn continues to expand across the country. Our focus includes the development of new hotels to meet demand for high-quality budget accommodation at coastal resorts."

Nick Taylor, Scarborough Borough Council's urban renaissance manager, added that the new development should be applauded and is great news for the town because it shows that confidence in Scarborough's potential is growing.

Hotel jobs in the West Midlands have also been given a boost after Premier Inn announced plans to build a new 112-bedroom establishment at the Opus 40 business park that will bring 45 roles to the area.
