A development which will turn a partially-demolished building into flats and a hotel has been given the green light by Southend council and could help to bolster Essex hotel jobs.
The Essex Echo reported that councillors voted in favour of the application to turn the Esplanade House site, in Eastern Esplanade, Southend, into more than 200 homes, a 64-bedroom hotel, a restaurant and shops.
It reported: "The application had been recommended for approval by planning officers, with a report saying it would increase tourism in the town ... In a Section 106 planning agreement, contributions will be made to road improvements in Eastern Esplanade and Woodgrange Drive, including new pedestrian crossings."
The newspaper added that the development will also include surface car parks, cycle parking and around 50 affordable homes at the back of the site.
Compass Hotels recently secured the lease on another establishment in Essex after it completed a deal to manage the Best Western Stansted Manor Hotel, which will now be turned into a Travelodge, according to Property Week.
