Councillors back Travelodge plans for Hartlepool Marina

Proposals for a new Travelodge at Hartlepool Marina have received councillors' backing, which could see a number of hotel jobs being brought to the north-east.

Developer Jomast has been granted permission to build the five-storey, 65-bedroom establishment at The Lanyard, on land next to the KFC restaurant and Vue cinema, the Peterlee Mail reports.

Hartlepool Borough Council's planning committee voted unanimously in favour of the Travelodge development, which will include a restaurant and bar, delivering chef jobs and bar staff opportunities, as well as the obvious hotel jobs.

Conservative group leader Ray Wells said the hotel could act as a "catalyst" for other new investment in an area that has largely been wasteland for the past two decades.

Independent councillor Hilary Thompson added: "From a tourism and economic angle, we need this. It would be a good addition to the town."

Last month, Hartlepool planning officials approved plans for a £150,000 revamp at the Fens Hotel, on Catcote Road.
