Luxury hotel could replace former Wigan police building

A luxury hotel firm may create hotel jobs in Wigan amid reports the city's former police headquarters could become home to an upmarket hospitality franchise.

Bristol-based Sanguine Hospitality, the firm which operates Marco Pierre White's branded hotel-restaurants, plans to turn the building into a 60-room hotel.

According to the Wigan Evening Post, it has lodged a formal application with the council and expects to hear the result of this at some point next year. The building was constructed in the 1970s and has been vacant for nearly ten years after the police headquarters moved elsewhere.

Although Sanguine has declined to release an artist's impression of its plans for the site, it is thought the company will attempt to revive the property rather than demolish it completely.

Site owner Goldcrest Properties has backed the move. Chief executive officer Michael Collins said: "We are keen to see it succeed because it will bring many much-needed jobs to Wigan."

Unemployment in Wigan Borough fell by 1.03 per cent last month, the second highest drop in Greater Manchester.
