Edinburgh hotel given green light

Scotland could see 200 new hotel jobs go on the market after a controversial plan to build a hotel in Edinburgh's historic Cowgate district was given the green light by city planners.

Jansons Property will start work on the £35 million development in the new year, reports STV News.

The company hope to create a new 259-bed hotel along with a nightclub and several shops, offering a selection of hospitality jobs, but heritage groups have criticised the plans for engaging insufficiently with their surroundings.

A modern gable end which will be visible from South Bridge is felt to detract from the overall atmosphere of the area.

Commenting on the decision, Jansons Property managing director Andy Jansons said he hoped "that both developers and heritage interests can work together to find common ground".

The Architectural Heritage Society of Scotland wrote a letter to councillors describing the proposed development as "an architectural fudge" and a "poor pastiche" of the Cowgate's distinctive design, STV News reported earlier in the week.
