Plans to transform a derelict Penarth landmark into a hotel through £6 million of redevelopment could create hotel jobs in Wales and attract tourism to the area.

The Marine Buildings in the Vale of Glamorgan seaside resort town have been the focus of a scheme to create a 55-bedroom luxury hotel, reports the Penarth Times.

Head chef positions and other catering roles may become available in the attached wine bar and cafe if the scheme meets with approval from the Design Commission for Wales and the Vale Council.

Restaurateur Benigno Martinez is behind the plan. His son Tanny said the mooted hotel could employ around 30 staff and attract business and tourism to the town.

"Depending on planning, we hope to start in April or May next year, with work taking between 16 and 18 months. It's going to be a very classy hotel," he added.

Penarth was a highly popular tourist destination in the Victorian era and has recently become noted as a common destination for Welsh retirees. It retains much of its original Victorian architecture.
