Carlisle post office 'set for luxury transformation'

Hotel recruitment in Carlisle could be given a boost by plans from a group of property developers to regenerate the Cumbria city's former post office.
Simon Harrison, Philip Rheinbach and Robin Graham aim to transform the neo-classical building into a boutique hotel, reports Caterer and Hotelkeeper.
It would be the city's first luxury development of this kind and the mooted hotel would have 40 to 90 bedrooms and a four-star rating.
Mr Harrison said Carlisle tends to lose out on tourist trade to nearby conurbations because it lacks a luxury hotel.
"Despite Carlisle's position, rich heritage, castle and cathedral, it has not previously promoted itself well nationally and internationally as a tourist destination," he added.
The planned application is expected to include a restaurant and bar as well as a hotel.
According to Carlisle's tourism website, it offers a wealth of historic attractions to visitors, including Roman and Norman ruins. Mr Harrison and his fellow developers hope their regeneration plans will give a fillip to tourism in the region.
