Plans to redevelop the Ramside Hall Hotel in Durham could create hotel jobs and make the establishment one of the top golfing destinations in Europe, the developer has suggested.

The £11 million scheme is expected to create 104 new jobs and offer a boost to the region's tourist economy, reports the Journal.

Ramside currently employs 550 people in the hospitality sector and guests at the hotel contribute £2.67 million to the local economy every year.

Estates director John Adamson said the hotel already had one of the north of England's favourite golf courses and expressed his hope this expansion could take it to the next level.

"By expanding the hotel and creating a new course we are polishing our golfing diamond," he added.

Mr Adamson explained: "This new course will be bigger, better, longer and even more exciting to play."

The historic Ramside hotel dates from Elizabethan times and was redeveloped into a hotel in 1963. It has since become one of Durham's most popular luxury destinations.
