Plans to develop a 120-bed hotel in Worcestershire could offer a boost to hospitality recruitment in the region if given the green light by the city council.

The Premier Inn hotel would come as part of the redevelopment of Worcestershire County Cricket Club's stadium, the New Road ground.

It would join new club facilities as part of a £9 million scheme that includes a conference centre, a supporter's bar, an executive suite and extended seating for fans.

Worcestershire chief executive David Leatherdale said enhancing the club's facilities was important in moving towards a positive future.

"While cricket is key to the city and what we are as a club, there are only 50 days of cricket during the summer and the aim is to make this a 365-day-a-year business," he claimed.

John Bates, head of acquisitions for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, added that the scheme came as part of the firm's plan to continue to grow by up to 65,000 hotel bedrooms by 2016.

Worcestershire County Cricket Club, one of England's top teams, counts England cricketer Vikram Solanki among its players.
