Hospitality recruitment in Manchester has been given a boost with the news that Spanish chain Melia Hotels plans to open a business in the city as part of the prestigious First Street project.

The company will commit £25 million to building a 208-bed, four-star hotel, only its third in the UK.

It is expected to include a restaurant, bar, spa and conference facilities, and will sit alongside the council's wider redevelopment of the area, which includes a new cultural centre with cinemas and restaurants.

Melia chief executive and vice chairman Gabriel Escarrer said he is excited about the prospect of engaging with a larger project and helping Manchester City Council achieve its aims for the site.

"Within our strategy to expand in the main European cities, the group is looking forward, subject to planning approval, to being located at such a vibrant destination," he added.

The 20-acre First Street scheme is managed by Ask Developments and is expected to produce property to a value of £750 million. The company previously helped regenerate Manchester's Deansgate Locks.
