Staff in hotel jobs at the Haycock Hotel in Wamsford, Peterborough, will be working under new ownership after the Macdonald Hotels and Resorts group took over the historic establishment.

The 48-bedroom hotel is rumoured to have been a resting place for Mary Queen of Scots on the way to her execution and a former temporary residence for Queen Victoria.

Although the 40-strong staff are expected to be retained by the new owner, it also plans to enhance the food on offer by changing the menu to ensure chefs only use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

Chris Gillett, managing director of Macdonald Hotels management services, said the Haycock offered impressive and up-to-date conference facilities and could accommodate over 250 delegates.

"These factors, combined with its geographical location, make the Haycock an excellent strategic fit for [the company]," he added.

Macdonald Hotels owns 45 properties across England and Scotland. It was recently shortlisted for a Beautiful South award for its Windsor establishment.
