Hotel jobs could be created in the Wimbledon area if plans to create a budget hotel are allowed to go ahead, despite some concern from local residents over the proposed building work.

The work on Broadway would involve the demolition of three floors and the construction of eight more at the former job centre, which has been disused for the last three years, reports the Croydon Guardian.

Travelodge, Ibis and Holiday Inn are reputed to be interested in securing the lease if construction goes ahead.

Property manager Mustak Ibrahim, from developer Crown Properties, said: "We will take all valid complaints from residents into account but I don't think there have been any."

A spokesman from Travelodge, which is undertaking an aggressive expansion campaign across the UK, said there is a lack of affordable accommodation in Wimbledon and claimed the company would be able to provide this.

Travelodge recently announced plans to create 1,000 hospitality jobs through the opening of 41 hotels across the country.
