Hotel jobs could be created in Bristol through the development of an eight-storey, 175-bedroom hotel in the city centre proposed by the UK's largest hotel chain, Premier Inn.

The Whitbread-owned chain is planning to occupy a site at Lewins Mead which has been left derelict for a number of years and invest up to £10 million in the property, which will include a bar and restaurant.

Peter Lawson, associate director at development and planning specialists Turley Associates, said he is delighted with the decision to allow the scheme to go ahead.

"Together with new jobs, the hotel will attract significant numbers of tourists and business travellers to the city who are seeking affordable centrally located accommodation," Mr Lawson added.

He expressed his hope this move would be a positive one for the Bristol economy.

Earlier in the month, Whitbread announced plans to open a new establishment in Wycombe, delivering roughly 40 jobs for the town through a £5 million investment.
