Birmingham has become the latest city to sign up the Best Bar None (BBN) awards scheme, which aims to recognise good management in the UK's hospitality industry.
The programme assesses people in pub, bar and hotel manager roles against a wide range of criteria such as door security, first aid provisions, emergency contingency plans and how effective they are at dealing with abusive customers.
Staff members and regular customers will be invited to express their views about establishments, while licensees will also be playing a role - articulating in their own words how their premises contribute to the vibrancy and social appeal of Birmingham city centre.
British Beer and Pub Association Midlands secretary, Richard Matthews, welcomed the initiative and said that Birmingham's diverse nightlife made it an ideal candidate for the BBN scheme.
He added: "With the increasing emphasis on responsible retailing it is only right that those outlets that are setting high standards should be rewarded through the Best Bar None scheme."
In addition to selecting an overall winner, awards will also be handed out for six sub-categories - city centre pub, city centre bar, suburban pub, suburban bar, nightclub and hotel.
