Pub chain praises staff

Pub chain Enterprise Inns has praised the "resilience" of its staff as it revealed its earnings in the last six months in line with expectations.

The firm, which has more than 7,000 pubs across the country, said it had invested in its properties and worked closely with people employed in hospitality jobs at its outlets to create an "estate of the highest quality" in recent months.

While the nationwide ban on smoking in public spaces is said to have had an impact on trading for many firms in the hospitality sector, Enterprise Inns said that it could turn out to be a good thing.

It argued there is "cause for optimism that the new smoke free environment will begin to attract those who in the past may have shunned pubs due to the smoky atmosphere".

Ted Tuppen, the chief executive of Enterprise Inns, told the Publican: "What amazes me is how well our great pubs are doing. Great licensees are getting on with their job."
