Those with the enthusiasm and ambition to pursue a career in the pub industry have been told by one expert that it is a job with "a great deal of responsibility".

James Wilmore, senior reporter at The Publican - a firm which brings together a portfolio for the pub and bar industry and includes thePublican.com and a newspaper of the same name - has said being a pub manager, landlord or general pub worker is "not for the faint-hearted".

He advised to gain a personal license to run a pub a National Certificate for Personal License Holders is required, which is only offered by "accredited organisations".

Research from the Beer and Pub Association showed total beer sales were down 4.5 per cent in quarter two of 2008 compared to the same period last year, suggesting people intent on getting into the sector need to be determined.

"It is a tough job with a great deal of responsibility and should not be entered into lightly," Mr Wilmore said.
