Research into people's aspirations has demonstrated nearly one in four people dreamt of launching their own pub or restaurant, it has been reported.

Carried out by leading catering recruitment website Caterer.com, the survey showed this figure was more than those who wanted to become an astronaut at eight per cent and a doctor at 11 per cent.

Of the 24 per cent of respondents who said they wished to open their own hospitality establishment 92 per cent said the industry had "become increasingly appealing".

Michael Coaker, lecturer in culinary arts at Thames Valley University, said he was not surprised by the rising popularity of the catering industry suggested by the study.

"High expectations and standards within UK hospitality have … meant foundation degrees are proving to be more and more popular with chefs currently working in the industry, updating their culinary skills," he added.

The poll encompassed 2,860 respondents.

In other news, chef Andrew West-Letford knew he had chosen the right place for him when he joined the AA rosette-awarded The Swan in Streatley, according to Get Bracknell.

His restaurant manager suggested the new recruit's enthusiasm had played a role in him garnering praise from diners.
