A shortage of skilled professionals to work in pub manager jobs is a major factor in the industry's current decline, it has been suggested.

Speaking to Recruiter, Jacqui Sterry, managing director at Mise en Place, said talent shortages and overexpansion had left many areas of the pub industry in poor health.

She suggested that many pub firms had become so large that they were failing to keep a tight grasp on incomings and outgoings.

"That tends to be a problem when you get very large. But in terms of management, it is finding the right people who want to grow with the company and like the concept of the company," she noted.

"It is matching the right expectations of the client with the candidates in terms of concept and career progression."

The British Beer & Pub Association recently reported that up to 52 pubs are closing per week, threatening many hospitality jobs around the UK.
