People in Wrexham pub jobs might consider taking a course in Welsh after the news that a redeveloped pub has reopened its doors as an establishment focused on encouraging pub-goers to speak in their native tongue.

The former Seven Stars bar on Chester Street has been renamed Saith Seren, a direct Welsh translation of its original name, and is being managed by the Wrexham Welsh Centre, reports BBC News.

It was officially opened by Welsh learner of the year and Wrexham Supporters' Trust member, Spencer Harris, and former Wrexham manager and player Dixie McNeil.

Saith Seren's chair, Wrexham councillor Marc Jones, said he hoped the pub would encourage people to learn the language.

"As well as promoting the Welsh language and culture in all aspects of Welsh life, Saith Seren is also about celebrating local achievement and pride in Wrexham," added Mr Jones.

The Welsh Language Board claimed 582,000 people could speak Welsh in 2001, an increase of 2.1 per cent from 1991.
