A range of companies have received accolades at the Good Food Ireland Awards recognising them for excellence in the gastronomy industry, it has been reported.

Top Overall Member was awarded to the Ballymaloe House and Ballymaloe Cooking School in county Cork, which was hailed by judges as "a benchmark for all others", according to The Irish Times.

Minister for tourism Martin Cullen told the publication: "There are significant business opportunities in the provision of good food with over eight million overseas visitors having come to this country last year alone."

Also among the winners were Wine Person of the Year for Damian Corr at The Merrion Hotel in Dublin, Host of the Year for Kay O'Flynn of Rathsallagh House in county Wicklow and Best Local Breakfast for the Coolanowle country house and organic farm in county Carlow.

It was reported recently by the newspaper that the Irish Hotels Federation has requested for a boost in funding from the government to help commercially-sound organisations through the economic crisis.
