Chain eateries see rise in sales

Chain pubs and restaurants that make an effort to attract customers are reaping the benefits, according to new data.
Figures from Peach Factory business tracker, run in conjunction with KPMG and UBS, show that sales across 11 pub and restaurant chains in the UK were up 5.6 per cent in January.
If this upward trend continues, restaurant jobs may see a boost.
An increase in discount offers and an extended New Year holiday were cited as reasons behind this growth.
Richard Hathaway, head of travel, leisure and tourism at KPMG, says: "The figures suggest the eating and drinking out sector is showing resilience in the downturn, but the test will be whether January's sales bounce continues and translates to the bottom line."
Peach Factory chief executive Peter Martin added that the higher levels of professionalism and investment in chain eateries mean they are able to compete successfully in tough economic times.
However, he advised caution, stating that these are just one month's figures.
Asda's monthly income tracker recently highlighted that families have an average of £143 a week left to spend on non-essentials such as holidays and eating out.
