A record number of youngsters can now commence working as a chef after graduating from the Fifteen Foundation London apprenticeship scheme.

A total of 15 promising young chefs officially graduated from the programme, which has been shortened from 18 to 12 months.

More than half of the cohort had been offered chef jobs before the end of the course, which offers opportunities for disadvantaged young people to learn skills for working in hospitality.

Fifteen Foundation chief executive Penny Newman said: "We are very proud of the class of 2009. Their hard work has paid off and it is really pleasing to see them setting off on their chosen paths."

Each graduate will receive a Fifteen dog tag and certificate from Fifteen's executive head chef Andrew Parkinson and Jamie Oliver's mentor Gennaro Contaldo.

Gary King, director at Collins King & Associates, recently told Recruiter that hospitality jobs can be a good career choice for the UK's unemployed youth.
