Applications for the Hospitality Industry Trust (HIT) Scotland's annual Emerging Talent Scholarship scheme will open tomorrow (October 27th).

The £100,000 initiative invites 200 ambitious individuals working in leisure, tourism and hospitality jobs to attend world-class training courses and learning experiences.

Its organisers claim that the scheme could return over £1 million to Scotland's hospitality industry by teaching people new skills, promoting best practice and improving staff retention.

David Cochrane, chief executive of HIT Scotland, said that in the short term the Emerging Talent Scholarships will help stretch hard hit training budgets, adding: "Individuals benefit from the prestige of the award and the new skills they develop."

He stated that in the long term the scholarship programme aims to find and nurture the next generation of leaders who will push the industry forward.

The scheme will be announced at the Caterer.com and Scottish Tourism Forum's Mind the Gap – Hospitality Skills Shortages in Scotland conference, which takes place tomorrow, and the scholarships will be awarded at the Emerging Talent conference on February 3rd 2010.

Entries for the scholarship will be accepted until December 11th.

HIT aims to help people in hospitality jobs achieve their full potential and since its establishment in 1994 has distributed 8,000 bursaries to students from universities and colleges across Scotland.
