A proposed leisure scheme in Newport could create a variety of roles for pastry chefs and other kitchen professionals across the seven restaurants it plans to develop as part of the site.

The Friars Walk scheme could bring 1,400 jobs to the Welsh town overall, reports the South Wales Argus.

Queensbury, the developer behind the project, hopes to expand an existing pub and introduce the new eateries as an incentive for visitors and local residents to visit the city centre and provide a boost to Newport's night-time economy.

A planning application was submitted to the council last week and is expected to be considered in the spring.

Council leader Matthew Evans said the job creation proposed by the developers would be a step forward for the city and a welcome relief for its population.

Newport has recently seen a growth in visitors to the city centre as schemes like this one encourage residents to make the trip. The average footfall rose by nearly 30,000 in October on a year-to-year basis, according to the city council.
