Plans for Hampshire McDonald's may go ahead

A drive-through McDonald’s restaurant could generate hospitality jobs in Bedhampton, Hampshire, despite complaints from local residents. Over 300 people signed a petition pretesting against the plan but councillors look likely to give it the green light.

The restaurant will seat 100 people and create jobs for around 80 people in the area, reports The News.

Despite the positive economic effect the development could have for Bedhampton, many people nearby have expressed concerns over an increase in traffic caused by growing numbers of visitors and a possible rise in anti-social behaviour.

Caroline Scott, from Chestnut Avenue, added that the possibility of a McDonald's sign "glaring in" through her window is also an issue.

However, the council has claimed the restaurant’s role in creating jobs could give the area an economic boost.

Jenny Wride, councillor for Bedhampton, said: "We desperately need jobs for our young people. I know the company gives their staff good training and support."

McDonald's has announced plans to open 30 new drive-through restaurants in the UK annually, creating upwards of 1,800 jobs a year.
