The move could create 40 full-time jobs and an unknown number of part-time positions, reports the Press.

Arguments between planning officers and developers had almost scuppered the proposal, with English Heritage objecting to several of the company's design plans.

However, councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing said it is important to bring the site back into use, after allowing it to lie derelict for a number of years.

The project will include a zone comprising hotel space, bars and restaurants as well as retail and office developments, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Another zone will focus on logistics and manufacturing. Around 21,000 jobs will be created in total by the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) scheme, which is expected to be partially completed in the next fifteen months.

MAG chief executive Charlie Cornish said the project, called Airport City, has been under development for a number of years before reaching this point.
